socialism predates marx. it simply implies care for the poor & cooperative ownership. also, every government that does anything for its people is to that degree socialist. to allow stalin & mao & castro to appropriate the mantle of socialism is as irresponsible as allowing the inquisition & the witch hunts to appropriate the mantle of christianity. socialism is not an intricate systemic scheme, it is a very simple concept: government care for the poor & cooperative ownership/control of property. if you want to know why europe cares for its poor & sick, it is because of european socialists, such as the (original) labour party. occupy is already largely socialist but only some of us acknowledge it by its name. if more of us took that step it would be a victory for honesty & give me hope that our movement is serious about improving the world.

Rowan, I'm glad you brought this up. It's perfectly valid to claim that I ought to call my position socialism. However, my definition of socialism can never be the same as your definition of socialism, nor anyone else's. Which socialism? Do you claim me to support market socialism or anarcho-syndicalism? What about autonomism or trotskyism? Which particular industries should be controlled by the state, and which not? I don't know, do you? What should be the definition of "the state"? I'm trying to demonstrate that it is folly to assume that any particular "ism" can be packaged as a solid, unchanging object that we can simply plug the human race into. Sanity involves becoming aware of what are hearts are telling us now, not revisiting the writings of Marx (and we've REALLY figured it out THIS time), or cherry-picking our principles from a handful of peoples' revolutions that met with varying levels of success. If Occupy were to rebrand itself as a "Socialist" movement, how would it progress from that point forward?

i find it extremely cruel & unfair & disrespectful that you denigrate socialism & yet you promote it under a more sanitized name of "sanity", as if you wish to justify the false libels that mccarthyites flung at socialists, or to recycle the pompous lie that stalinism & maoism were prime examples of true socialism. it seems clear to me that you're willing to denigrate that which is unpopular in service of your vision of change, & i want no part of such a scheme. to agree with socialism & yet condemn its name & by extension its adherents who have been calling for the world to care for the poor for hundreds of years, is shameful. other than that, great blog, but that one flaw is vital. trampling truth & unpopular dissenters is the way of the corrupt world i occupy to replace. if you can come correct and admit that you're socialist, then you may count me as your comrade for life.
